Advising - A Faculty Responsibility

The undergraduate faculties of the University have endorsed the principle that every full-time, continuing faculty member should work as an academic advisor to majors and/or undeclared students. Because of sabbaticals and unfilled positions the typical advising load is about 18-20 students. (Ideally, it would be 13-14 students.) Each department provides advisors for undeclared students, but the number provided is inversely related to the number of majors being advised. Department chairs work with the Associate Dean for Academic Operations to see that the advising responsibilities are distributed equitably.

Advising is an explicit component of annual personnel reviews.

More information on advising can be found at the Academic Advising Resource Center.
