Course Proposal Guidelines
Course proposals, for both new and substantially revised courses, are to be submitted by department chairpersons and program coordinators to the Associate Dean’s Office (Dona Hickey) at least one week before they are to be acted upon by the Academic Council. Upon endorsement by the Academic Council, proposals will be submitted to the Arts & Sciences faculty for approval. Please be sure the Registrar has approved the assigned course number.
Proposals are to contain the following information: (Download this list)
- Course number
- Full course title
- Catalog description
- Prerequisites (if any)
- Hours of credit
- Estimate of student enrollment
- By whom and when the course will be offered (e.g., whether every year, alternate years, summer session)
- Staffing implications (regarding any need for additional staff, overloads, reassignments, and changes in the staffing of general education and other courses)
- Adequacy of library, technology, and other resources (to be previewed and certified by the appropriate staff members from the library, computer services, etc.)
- Relation to existing courses and curricula in other departments, programs, and schools (to be discussed with these units prior to submission):
- Indication of approval by department or program
- Purpose and rationale for the course (including evidence of student interest, and how the course relates to the department or program curriculum)
- Brief outline of the course (detailing the topics to be covered)
- Sign-offs for items 8 & 9:

- International Education Committee (Uliana Gabara) - if the course includes international travel
