Planning Your Program
Since students are not expected to declare a major during their first year at Richmond, they take a variety of courses that pique their interests and leave them wanting more. General education requirements are minimal but introduce many students to fields of study they wouldn’t have discovered any other way.
The School of Arts & Sciences offers 46 majors and 40 minors within 34 different departments and programs.
Even before students choose a major, we make sure each student receives advising geared toward his or her unique circumstances. The Academic Advising Resource Center assigns all incoming students to a faculty or staff member whose interests and background complement their own. Once students declare a major in the School of Arts & Sciences, typically during their second year, they are assigned an advisor within their new department.
When students decide on a course of study, many choose to take advantage of our incredible experiential learning opportunities, undergraduate summer research and initiatives such as the Weinstein Fellows Program.
Supplementing your classroom experience with out-of-the-box learning opportunities isn’t just an option—it’s the status quo. By the time students graduate, they are prepared to compete for prestigious fellowships, gain acceptance to top graduate programs and jump headfirst into promising careers.
