Modlin Center for the Arts: Executive Director

The Director will provide artistic, academic, fiscal, and strategic leadership for the Modlin Center for the Arts. The Director will have faculty status and will report to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.

The Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond services 200 events annually: our season, departmental seasons, campus wide events and rental clients. A performing arts season of 30-35 world-class events reflects research interests of the faculty in the resident departments, supports interdisciplinary programming in the arts and across the university, are of interest and educational value to students, and has both entertainment and intellectual value to the larger Richmond community.

Required qualifications:

Master's degree and five years (or bachelor's degree and seven years) of executive administrative experience in performing arts presentation or production in a public, nonprofit, or commercial context, with demonstrated skills in leadership, strategic planning, fundraising, and communication.

Experience in fiscal management.

Proven record of collaborative working relationships with staff, administration, community members, the media, and the arts community.


Preferred qualifications:

An advanced degree in the arts or related field.

Senior administrative experience in an academic arts presentation venue.

Familiarity and working relationships with the arts community at national and international levels.

Teaching experience in topics of performing arts management and philanthropy.


Essential Functions:

Ability to articulate and implement an intellectual and artistic vision that integrates the Modlin Center's presenting and production services into the larger academic and research mission of the School of Arts and Sciences and the university.

Develop programming that supports the strategic goals of the university and broad interdisciplinary and cross-school collaborations.

Direct and manage overall operations, including community relations, fundraising, marketing, programming, operations, production and finance.

Oversee an annual operating budget of approximately 2.5 million dollars.

Lead in the forging of strong, cooperative community relationships by fostering partnerships with local artists and arts organizations.

Co-direct (with museum director) nationally recognized arts management program.

Interact with leaders across the university and contribute to relevant university-wide policies, procedures, and programs through service on committees and work groups

Maintain strong relationships with national and international artist managements.

Coordinate residency opportunities for students and faculty with touring artists.

Manage staff of 9 full time employees, 10 part time employees, and 50 students.
