University of Richmond

Why the Liberal Arts?

The University of Richmond is first and foremost a liberal arts university, designed to offer its students a broad and deep education that teaches them how to think.

Before they declare a major, all students matriculate into the School of Arts & Sciences, an opportunity with life-changing consequences. Many stay in A&S all four years. Others go on to the schools of business or leadership studies.

Employers want to hire liberal arts majors because they are innovative and independent thinkers with strong communication and critical reasoning skills. Whether you major in classics or psychology, you’re building a valuable base of knowledge and experiences that will both land you a job and prepare you for life.

But it’s about more than just finding a good job. Students want to find something they are passionate about that will give their work and lives purpose. The School of Arts & Sciences, with its liberal arts curriculum, is where passion and purpose meet.

Take an art history class. Learn Italian. Read Homer. Before you choose a major, you will take a range of classes that will let you discover what makes you tick. There is an Arts & Sciences discipline that speaks to everyone. Just listen.
