School of Arts & Sciences

The School of Arts & Sciences (A&S) offers students the opportunity to study the arts, sciences, humanities and social sciences from both historical and contemporary perspectives.  It is home to 2,829 students—including 2,079 liberal arts majors and the entire first-year class of more than 750 students.

All Richmond students begin in the School of Arts & Sciences because we know exploration is the first step in finding out who you are and who you’d like to become. After the first year, nearly 70 percent of students choose to stay in A&S and declare a major in one of 38 unique disciplines and 10 concentrations.

The school boasts over 225 faculty members representing 20 countries. We have authorities on everything from printmaking to Abigail Adams to sea sponges.

In addition to offering courses that stir the mind, faculty members routinely team up with students to conduct research that helps push students and prepare them for graduate work or careers.

We also emphasize internships and study abroad experiences, as well as service to the local community, that encourage students to go out into the world and test what they’re learning in the classroom.
